  3. How it all Began • Augmented reality is a technology that overlays the virtual world over the physical environment. In other words, AR integrates digital information with the user’s environment in real time. • The initial augmented reality development happened in the 1960s when it was used in the construction of head-mounted displays. • Ivan Sutherland was the first person to have developed a head-mounted display system based on augmented reality. • Subsequent augmented reality applications were in virtual fixtures used by the Air Force and enhanced visual navigation systems used by NASA. The term augmented reality was actually coined much later by Tom Caudell in 1990

  4. Progressive Development of AR • The interest in AR technology came to life only in 2009 with the smartphone revolution. Further, with the boom of smart wear technology, AR technology took a leap into the mainstream. • Smart wear technology like Google Glass or Magic Leap has enabled a second resurgence for augmented reality app development. • Traditionally AR was restricted to gaming and entertainment.
