  1. Writing for Effective Translation: Tips to Boost Quality of your Translated Content

  2. WRITING CONTENT FOR TRANSLATION Many entrepreneurs are turning towards professional translation agencies for reaping the benefits of translation services that help them in accomplishing their marketing requirements and communicate their message effectively to global audiences. However, before you consider sending a piece of content to a translator, make sure you look at it thoroughly and go over your writing to make sure it’s suitable for translation. Here are some general guidelines that will help you to avoid common pitfalls while writing content for translation and make it more impactful.

  3. KEEP IT SHORT Keep the sentences short is the golden rule in writing for translation. The shorter the text, the smaller the chances of making a mistake or mislead a translator. Try to keep each sentence of about 20 words or less in order to improve readability. Insider tip: Reading sentences aloud while translating will help to keep them short.

  4. USE PROPER WORD ORDER Each language has its own uniqueness when it comes to standard word order. Therefore, when one changes the order of words, it affects the whole meaning of the sentence. To prevent any further confusion, use standard English word order whenever possible, which is - subject, verb and object with associated modifiers. Make sure to use correct grammatical structure with proper punctuations.

  5. AVOID HUMOUR Even though a humorous style of writing makes the content more engaging and interesting to read, you are better off getting rid of humour in your translations. Humour in content rarely translates with equivalency. In addition, never overlook the fact that a translator writes for global audiences. Incorporating some local humour doesn’t do any good to your writing. It is better to use the words which can be precisely understood by a translator, so that the content can be further translated to global audiences.

  6. BE CLEAR WITH INTERNATIONAL DATES Did you know, people from US follow a date format that begins with the month and ends with the year? That said, it is important to pay attention to international dates because if you don’t it will lead to huge confusion amongst global audiences. For example, In US, 08/05/2016 will be considered 5th of August while in Switzerland it will be read as 8th of May. A smart way to avoid confusion is to spell out the name of the month. Alternatively, keep in touch with the translator to talk about such issues and avoid any future misunderstandings.

  7. AVOID USING PHRASAL VERBS Don’t opt for phrasal verbs as they tend to complicate translations. Phrasal verbs are considered informal and depict multiple meanings which will only confuse the translator and might cause misunderstandings in document translation.

  8. MAKE SURE IT FITS No two languages are the same. There are differences in sentence length and even in the length of individual word. While translating a piece of content into other language it is important to pay attention to word and sentence length beforehand to make sure the translated piece fits into an allotted space.

  9. TO SUM UP When writing for global audiences, it is important to keep these guidelines in mind and make sure that the source text is easy to translate. Do not forget to keep in touch with the translator to address any doubts and misunderstandings in the writing. Moreover, look for an agency that provides professional translation services along with interpreter services at competitive prices and have a significant reputation in the industry for their works.
