  3. Some Expressions Used in Debate BEGINNING LINE (NEGATIVE) • Good Morning, members of the jury, teachers, Mr. / Ms. ____ and my dear classmates and friends. I stand before you to express my views in against the motion ___________.We wholeheartedly oppose the motion.

  4. STARTING YOUR ARGUMENT • "I firmly believe that..." • "It is clear that..." • "My first point is..."

  5. PRESENTING EVIDENCE • "According to [source],..." • "Research shows that..." • "Statistics indicate that..."

  6. REFUTING OPPONENTS • "I disagree with my opponent's point because..." • "While my opponent argues that..., it is important to note that..." • "My opponent fails to consider..."

  7. CONCLUSION / CLOSING YOUR ARGUMENT • "In conclusion, it is evident that..." • "Therefore, we must..." • "To sum up..."

  8. GENERAL DEBATE PHRASES • "Furthermore,..." • "On the other hand,..." • "To put it simply,..." • "This brings us to the important point that..."

  9. TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR DEBATE SPEECH (1) Elaborate on Each Point Add more examples, statistics, and quotes to  support your arguments.  This will give your speech more depth and make your points stronger.

  10. TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR DEBATE SPEECH (2)Use Transitional Phrases These phrases can help to smoothly move from one point to the next, making your speech more cohesive. For example, "Additionally," "Moreover," "On the other hand," and "In contrast."

  11. TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR DEBATE SPEECH (3)Provide Background Information Give some context or background on the topic.  This helps to set the stage for your arguments and makes your speech more comprehensive.

  12. TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR DEBATE SPEECH (4)Add Personal Anecdotes or Stories Sharing a relevant personal experience or story can add a unique touch to your speech and make it  more engaging.
