POTATO VARIETY PEPPER VARIETY TOMATO VARIETY The Solanaceous Evolution Garden Sandra Hoptowit Funded by Potato Genome Project, NSF Luis Stokes All Nations Alliance, NSF Garden Photos Purpose of the garden is Outreach to local Schools and Community Site of instruction to catholic services for study on independent living to teenagers-grade 6-12 Used garden “Eyes On” lessons in evolution, biodiversity at the family and genera level, commercial breeding programs do same things as natural evolution, mineral deficiencies, and plant viral diseases to lower and upper division biology classes. Served as gathering and tasting place for some Heritage faculty and staff • Plans for next year • We will teach DNA isolation and separation techniques, genetics, plant propagation, tissue culture, and general greenhouse management of their greenhouse as they grow the plants they propagate to 9-12th grade students at Yakama tribal school as part of our regular Outreach program with the school • Hopes for next year • We hope to have funding from this grant to support 2 of these students in the garden next summer. They could learn to do the physical tasks and research necessary to do such a project as this one.
