Companion Animal Definition • Animals that have a special relationship and association with humans • Are partially or totally dependent on people • Live in close proximity of people • Bond with people • A step further than do exotic pets • Interact with their owners • Mutual or reciprocal action or influence between animal and owner Campbell, K.L., Corbin, J.E., Campbell, J.R. State Fair Dog Show Overview • Youth must enroll in correct classes to show • Obedience Training – Beginning, No. 206 • Sub-novice and Novice • Obedience Training – Advanced, No. 207 • Grad Novice, Open, Grad Open, Utility, Brace, Team • Grooming & Handling, No. 204 • Dog Care, No. 200 • Assistance Dogs, 365.08 • Agility, Drill Team, Rally • Projects 204, 206, or 207

Youth (or immediate family as defined in rules) must own project dog(s) • Only junior fair exhibitor may show dog at any type of show on or after April 1, 2007 • Two youth cannot share same dog for State Fair competition • Youth cannot lease dog for State Fair competition • Dogs competing in Agility must be 18 months old • Dogs must be 6 months old by State Fair show dates, August 6 – 10 • Dogs must meet health requirements outlined in 2007 State Fair rules

  10. Dog Show Entries • One youth may enter any number of project dogs in Agility • Assistance Dogs can only be shown in Assistance Dog class • Youth showing Assistance Dogs can show other project dog(s) • Youth showing in Dog Care CANNOT show same or any other dog

  11. Youth may show more than one project dog (with exception of Dog Care) • In multiple levels of Obedience • Same or different project dog in Grooming & Handling (showmanship) • Same or different project dog in Drill Team, Brace, Team, and Rally • Two project dogs per Rally class

  12. Entry Process Classes August 6 - 10 • Enter directly to State Fair Entry Dept. by July 13 • Can enter any classes eligible for • Entry fee = $2.00 per dog per class • Late fees will apply • Entry Dept. will send out passes, etc. to each exhibitor

  13. Poster Entries • No limits on entries from counties • Youth must complete entry form • Educators make sure posters are eligible • Educators sign entry form • Youth responsible for sending entry form and poster to Lucinda Miller at OSU Extension Center at Piketon by July 13

  14. Agility • Entry deadline Wednesday, July 18, 6:00 p.m. • Junior handler/dog teams must be registered with USDAA Jr. Handler Program • Agility Trial, Saturday, August 4, Coliseum • Measuring at 8:30 a.m./ Judging at 10:00 a.m. • Two $500.00 State Fair Dog Scholarships Scholarships

  15. 4-H PetPALS • Intergenerational program • Utilizes the human-animal bond • Volunteers teach youth • Youth socialize and train pets for AAA visits • Youth learn skills to interact with seniors • Enhances intergenerational relations • Youth give to the community
