What we found out about the learners • Engagement is key • Alternative computational methods • Language gets in the way • Cognitive overload leads to ‘switch off’
Why mobile technology? • Provides immediate feedback • Offers opportunistic learning • Whenever/wherever • Inspires repeat attempts • Urges mental methods • Familiar/comfortable
Using the Nintendo to learn maths is great - it makes it less hard work and more like a game – ‘specially as you can try to beat your last score and you're playing against the clock. The picture questions are best - they make maths almost exciting!” “You’ve got to have excitement, whatever you’re doing. If not, your mind’s going to switch off and you’re just going to get bored and it’s just not going to happen.” “I can’t sit there and read … I learn by doing things……I sit and play....that’s how I do it…I do it all the time.”
