National COSEE Network The National COSEE Network is a network of regional centers that act locally, regionally and nationally.
National COSEE Goals • Promote the development of effective partnerships between research scientists and educators; • Disseminate effective ocean sciences programs and best practices that build on existing resources; • Promote a vision of ocean education as a charismatic, interdisciplinary vehicle for fostering scientific literacy
COSEE Great Lakes Scope • Largest COSEE nationally • Five Great Lakes, 8 states • 20% world’s fresh surface water • 1,200 km E-W, 720+ N-S • 16,000 km shoreline • 247,000 sq km watershed • 82 million US citizens • 13 million K-12 students
COSEE Great Lakes Scope • Involves educators, research scientists, students and the public • 8 major Objectives • 6 major Activity categories • More than 30 collaborators, including 4 other COSEEs • Funded 2005-2010
Paddle-to-the-Sea COSEE Great Lakes uses Paddle-to-the-Sea as a working theme, dealing with progressions – from fresh to salt water, from watershed to sea; and with progress – in water quality, science, technology and ecosystem management.
COSEE Great Lakes Goals • Inspire scientific literacy and environmental responsibility • Link education and research communities • Add freshwater component to the National COSEE Network • Improve Great Lakes/ocean sciences education • Improve Great Lakes/ocean sciences literacy among regional Tribes Tribes Stewardship Education Linkages Freshwater
