General Outlook • Day 1 (Tue): Plenary sessions • Day 2 (Wed): Break-out groups: • FD response to land-use & climate • FD effects on ecosystem properties • ES & social actors • Day 3 (Thu): Break-out groups: • Effects of FD concepts on ES • FD effects on ecosystem properties, ES & social actors
Day 2: break-out groups • Hands-on course on f-Diversity: • Calculating weighted means, FD indices… • Feed-back on the software’s manual • Two ecological bogs: • BOG 1: Functional Diversity: • Response to climate (latitude) and land-use (treatments) • Relationships between traits per se… LSS versus NES • BOG 2: Ecosystem properties • Decomposition • Biomass and wood density • A social bog
BOG 1: FD • Climate and land-use influences on FD: • - Do we find significant shifts in trait WM and significant reduction in trait range towards the poles? • Do we get a larger community-level niche space (wider trait range), or simply more ecological redundancy (more taxonomic diversity with similar trait range) towards the equator? • Do these patterns show any consistent similarities ordifferences between vegetative (productivity-related)and regenerative (regeneration-related) traits? • Do we find the same general plant trait syndromesdetected for mostly temperate floras? (e.g. Leaf SizeSpectrum vs. Nutrient Economy Spectrum) • How does land-use interact with climate to influence FD:Always in the same direction? or does direction or intensitychange with climate?
BOG 1: FD • Data • Vegetative and regenerative traits of the vascular plant species at as many sites as possible across the network (e.g. SLA, height, leaf toughness, leaf N, wood density, leaf size, seed size, seed shape) • Ideally, pristine versus 1-2 modified ecosystems • Measurement of the abundance of each species in ach of the plots considered (good taxonomic identification of all the species required?) • Analytical tools • Calculation of FD indices Hands-on course on f-Diversity. • Multivariate ordination • Some sort of null model? • Product(s): • Outline for a paper? • Dealing with tax. diversity in Manaus • LA versus SLA
BOG 2: EP • FD effects on ecosystem properties: • How do abiotic factors and different components of FD influence biomass production, carbon sequestration and litter decomposition across the DiverSus latitudinal and land-use gradients? • Is the general conceptual framework on biomass, carbon and nutrient cycling supported by empirical data across the network • Data • Measurement of species abundances • Data on climate and soils of each of the sites • Data or decent estimations of at lest one of these ecosystem properties: • Aboveground biomass and/or productivity (e.g. on the basis of DBH) • Carbon sequestration (measured or estimated) • Decomposition rate (measured through decomposition network)
BOG 2: FD effects • Methods: • Calculation of FD indices with f-Diversity • Calculation of the six steps described in Díaz et al. 2007
BOG 2: EP • Specific discussion points: defining action plans • BOG 2.1.: Natalia and the decomposers! Which EP can they produce for relating to FD, and when? • BOG 2.2.: Biomass & wood density: How can we obtain biomassestimates across the network? • Can we hope to standardizemeasurements/data of wood &stem density? • If we have time, perhapsconsider how to standardizemeasurments of soil C
BOG 3: ES & social actors • Discussions on: • Interdisciplinary questions, including the pros and cons of social versus economic valuation • Reformulating the “red-dot” and “purple-green” diagrams using social science concepts and terms • How do we do interdisciplinarity:Listing what work, what does not, what obstacles and breakthroughshave we experienced… at thekitchen-recipe level. • Collaboration on water issuesbetween Argentina and Arizona
Day 3: break-out groups • 09h30-11h00: • Two groups: • The basis for functional diversity indices • Synthesizing conclusions on terminology and functional diversity components (red-dots) from the social science perspective. • 11h30-13h30: • Two groups: • Examples for the “red-dot” diagram • Examples for the “purple-green” diagram • 15h00-16h30: • Plenary: • Presentation of group conclusions • Housekeeping, including: • * The TRY initiative • * The ICSU-DIVERSITAS-DiverSus Consultation
BOG 4: Examples for the red-dot! • Concrete examples specifying location, social actor… and the trait(s) for which an FD component is relevant • At least 10 worked-out examples
BOG 5: Examples for the purple-green! • Concrete worked-out examples linking ecological trade-offs with conflicting use/value interests and perhaps social conflicts
