Thinking About AVID Advancement Via Individual Determination Maria Petrov
AVID ??? • Tutoring? • Learning strategies? • A binder? • A way to get to college?
AVID Elective Class • A full year class • Focus on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Reading • College exploration • Enhances students‘ success in all other classes
Tutoring • Twice each week during AVID class • 7 students to one tutor ratio • Paid and volunteer tutors from local colleges and the community • Focus on high-level questioning and collaboration • Supports students’ success in challenge classes
Learning Strategies • Writing to Learn • Reading to Learn • Cornell Note-taking • 2 column notes • Used in all classes • WIC-R • Writing • Inquiry • Collaboration • Reading
AVID Binder • Teaches and reinforces organizational skills • Evidence of class notes from all classes • Reference source for studying • Checked weekly in AVID class
College Exploration • Speakers • College Visits • Information on college applications & financial aid process • On track for college preparatory high school classes
The AVID Student • Is academically “in the middle” • Has good attendance and school behavior • Wants to attend college • Enrolls in rigorous college preparatory classes (Challenge/Accelerated) • Maintains at least a “C” average • Takes notes and maintains an organized binder • Participates in weekly tutorials
What Happens to AVID Students??? • AVID students are more likely to enroll in AP classes, • AVID students are more likely to complete a college-readiness curriculum • AVID students are more likely to be accepted by a 4-year college/university and stay in college
Now What?? • Complete an AVID application • Parent and student signature • Turn in to Ms. Petrov (room 45) or the School Office • Schedule an interview • Sign up for AVID elective class • Follow AVID program • Go to college • THE SKY’S THE LIMIT!!!
