THE MISSION OF AVID • The mission of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
“While others talk about what should be done to prepare students for college, AVID is doing it. For more than 30 years, the AVID College Readiness System has helped thousands of students, many of whom are overlooked and underserved, rise above the obstacles they face to achieve academic success.”
AVID IS NOT…. • A remedial program • A gifted class • Merely a study skills course • For the meek and mild!!!
AVID IS…. • a course designed for students who are academically in the middle with potential to succeed in high school and enroll in a four-year university but who need extra support and encouragement. • for students who are motivated to succeed and have the desire to be challenged academically.
AVID Facts • AVID sends one third more students to 4-year colleges than the local and national average. • AVID students represented 17-47% of AP enrollees (on four campuses). • Students who participate in AVID enroll more often than students who don't participate, and the longer students enroll in AVID, the better is their college enrollment record. • AVID students are staying in college once they enroll; 89% of those who started are in college two years later. • More than twice the percentage of students with two years of middle school AVID took three or more AP classes than those with only one year or no AVID experience in middle school.
In short, the capital that students bring with them into the program does not seem to be as important as the capital that the students accrue while they are in the program.
Percent of Students Applying to and Getting Accepted to Four-Year Colleges One of the most impressive and consistent indicators of AVID's success is the rate at which it sends students to four-year colleges.
Eighth Graders Taking Algebra Students who take algebra in eighth grade are prepared for more advanced coursework in math and science once they reach high school. They are also more likely to attend and graduate from college than eighth-graders who do not take algebra. AVID encourages its junior high students to pursue college-preparatory coursework such as algebra, and they complete it at an impressive rate. (Elementary students need one). • Applications are due by deadline May 31 and are reviewed for eligibility (i.e., TN scores, recommendations, course grades, behavior) • Eligible applicants are then scheduled for an interview with the AVID Elective Teacher and AVID Counselor. • Students are notified by letter as to their acceptance status.
