  7. What Job is Right for You? Positions within the Federal Government are classified by pay plan, occupational series and grade. GS – 0800 – 05 GS – General Schedule (Pay Plan) (White Collar) 0800 – Job/Occupational Series – for Engineers 05 - Grade

Pay Plans • Appropriated Funds – Funded by Congress • General Schedule (GS) - White Collar Positions • Federal Wage Grade System (WG, WS, WL, etc.) - Blue Collar Positions (craft, trade, labor) • Senior Executive Service (SES) - Equivalent to CEOs and Generals • Non-Appropriated Funds (NAF) – Generate own funds • Various types of jobs - Childcare, recreation, lifeguard, etc.

  9. Series Numbers What is a “Series” Number? A number that represents an occupational group or a job family. Examples: 0800 - series number for Engineers 0201 - series number for Human Resources Alphabetical List of Job Titles with Series Number: www.opm.gov/qualifications/sec-iii/b/alph-ndx.htm Numerical List of Job Series with Job Titles: www.opm.gov/qualifications/sec-iii/a/num-ndx.htm

How to Apply • Set up an account on USAJOBS www.USAJOBS.gov • Create your resume using the USAJOBS on-line resume builder • Target resumes for each job • Store up to 5 different resumes in your USAJOBS account • Search job announcements using keywords such as your location, type of job or the agency you are interested in • Be sure to read entire announcement for “How to Apply” directions – be sure to include all required documents (transcripts, DD214, etc.)

Career Opportunities for Students & Recent Graduates • Pathways Programs • Internship Program • For students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, including high school to post graduate schools. • Provides students with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed. • May be converted non-competitively into a permanent position after graduation.

Career Opportunities for Students & Recent Graduates • Pathways Programs • Recent Graduates Program • Provides developmental opportunities in the Federal government for individuals who graduated from qualifying institutions with an associates, bachelors, masters, doctorate, vocational, technical degree or certificate. • Must apply within two years of degree/certificate completion except Veterans (up to six years). • Apply during senior year and before graduation.

Career Opportunities for Students & Recent Graduates • Pathways Programs • Presidential Management Fellows Program (PMF) • Premier leadership developmental program for advanced degree candidates. • Provides employment opportunities to masters, JD and doctoral-level graduates in STEM, contracting, finance, health, and other fields. • Must apply within two years of degree completion. • May be converted noncompetitively to permanent position upon successful completion of the program.
