2. Introduction Eph 5:22-23
Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.
Women, what are the things that can make it hard to obey this command? (read slide)(read slide)
3. Introduction Eph 5:25

4. Scripture Reading In tonight's lesson, Peter gives a straight forward command for wives and husbands to submit to one another. But who am I to teach this when I am so hopelessly single?
And I'm not the only one. Half of this group is not married either. I was thinking that it would be better for Warren to teach this lesson to the married couples while the rest of us go to Lollicup and get a boba.
But this lesson has as much relevance for single people as as it does for married couples. Most of you singles will marry your "soul mate" and step head long into the controversy of submission. And those who are already married, need to be reminded daily to submit to one another.
So without further delay, let's begin tonight's lesson by having someone read the next slide please:In tonight's lesson, Peter gives a straight forward command for wives and husbands to submit to one another. But who am I to teach this when I am so hopelessly single?

I had a conversation with Maria Wong this past Sunday who had taught from this exact same set of verses in the women's class. She said that of all the lessons she had taught, this one was the most contentious. All the women understood what this verse said, but none of them thought it was easy to obey. Why? Because of the world's definition of

Hupotasso (hoop-ot-as'-so)~From Hupo, meaning under; And Tasso meaning an agreed upon position. In other words, this is all about choice. It's like taking a new job:
You agree to take a position to work under the authority of a manager. I know my analogy is not perfect: marriage is not a job, though it is a lot of work. But the point is wives are to willingly choose to submit… even when their husbands don't deserve it.
Peter is addressing a specific type of marriage: What if the woman is a believer and her husband is an unbeliever? The apostle Paul minces no words:(read verses)

In other words, "Christians shouldn't marry unbelievers." This is a wise commandment supported by hard statistics. In one study I read, 72% of unequally yoked marriages resulted in the unbeliever convincing the Christian spouse to stop following Christ. That means less than 30% of the time the believer successfully convinces the unbeliever to follow Christ.

There are three couples I've met in our church where the Christian wives won over their pagan husbands to the gospel. The women didn't nag, bully or blackmail their hubbies into the kingdom of God. Instead, the husbands accepted Christ due to the pure and reverential lives of their wives.

9. For Women Only! 3Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. 4Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. Adornment

Kosmos~where we get the word, Cosmos, meaning decoration, i.e. the arrangement of the stars. Women of the first century liked to have their hair done, wear shiny jewelry and pretty clothes that sparkled like the stars in the sky. But Peter reminds women that their beauty should not come from the outside, but the inside. Now ladies, I'm not saying to neglect your outward appearance.
Outward beauty is good. I think all the men here can agree to that. We like it when you females do your hair, wear sparkly things and dress good. So keep it up. But,
Inward beauty is better! It says here that God really likes a woman to have a gentle and quiet spirit. And I think all the men here can also agree that we like that too.(read verses)

10. For Women Only! 5For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, 6like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. Submission is:

Verse 5 is a key verse in tonight's lesson. Submission to you husband is not difficult,
It's impossible if you depend upon your own understanding. After 40 years of radical feminism in the western world, women have achieved parity with men in both education and earning potential. How could you consciously give that up and submit to your husband as your master? It's against your nature.
Yet Jesus said in Mat 19:26: With God, all things are possible! Only by putting your hope in God will you be able to willingly submit to your husband, thereby making yourself beautiful by letting God shine through you.(read verses)

Christian husband
Unbelieving wife
Goal
Make her a co-heir; a believer.
Husbands submit:

For her salvation. … and treat them with respect (read verses)
I thought this last sentence was very odd. Would God be so human as to ignore your prayers simply because you dis' your wife? Others have interpreted this by saying that all sin, including being insensitive to your wife, hurts your relationship with God and that's why your prayers are hindered. But that doesn’t fit here because if that's what Peter meant that's what Peter would have said. But then it dawned on me
Context is King. If we go with the assumption that this entire section is talking about winning unbelievers to Christ, then this has new meaning. Imagine that
A Christian husband is married to an
Unbelieving wife. His ultimate
Goal, besides controlling her spending and putting up with the mother-in-law would be to
Make her a co-heir of the gracious gift of life; a believer.
Therefore, Peter is telling Husbands to submit to their wives by being conciderate and showing respect

15. Application Believing spouses need to submit to their unbelieving spouses to win them over to Christ with love.
If both are believers, they should be submitting to each other already
Eph 5:33~However, each one of you (husbands) also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
All this is done for the sake of the Lord. Let's bring this to a point of application:
