101 N A V I G A T I O N NAVIGATION IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
WHY MIDDLE SCHOOL? • Help students transition into middle school • If students don’t adjust, they are at risk for dropping out
WHY MIDDLE SCHOOL? • Help students engage in school • Navigation encourages them to join activities at school and belong
WHY MIDDLE SCHOOL? • Help students use this pivotal time in personal development • Middle school actions have lifelong consequences
WHY MIDDLE SCHOOL? • Help students prepare for transition to high school and beyond • Middle school is a “predisposition phase”
BASED ON RESEARCH • American School Counselor Association (ASCA) • Breaking Ranks II, (NASSP) • Breaking Ranks in the Middle: Strategies for Leading Middle Level Reform (NASSP) • “Developing & Managing Your School Guidance and Counseling Program” (Gysbers&Henderson)
FIVE KEY ELEMENTS 1. Personalizing: Curriculum-Delivered Advisories 2. Planning: Portfolios 5. Evaluating: Data 4. Empowering: Student-Driven Scheduling 3. Demonstrating: Student-Led Conferences
PERSONALIZING Key Element 1 Curriculum-Delivered Advisory
NAVIGATION ADVISORIES • Curriculum-Driven • Curriculum available for Grades 6-12 • Organized by themes • Advisories are regular meetings with educator-advisors • Small advisory group is personalized for students’ needs • Advisories often meet biweekly or weekly in middle school
PLANNING Key Element 2 Portfolios
PORTFOLIO STRUCTURE • Portfolios help students store work and reflect on it • Portfolios are organized around 3 ASCA standards:
DEMONSTRATING Key Element 3 Student-Led Conferences
STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES • Truly student-led! • Focused on three ASCA-based questions • What have I accomplished in school this year? • What do I hope to do in the future? • Who am I? • Reverence – time to listen
EMPOWERING Key Element 4 Student-Driven Scheduling
EVALUATING Key Element 5 Data Collection
HOW DOES NAVIGATION WORK?
CURRICULUM-DELIVERED ADVISORIES • OSPI has created a complete Navigation curriculum • Curriculum is based on ASCA standards • ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT: What have I accomplished in school this year? • CAREER DEVELOPMENT What do I want to do in the future? • PERSONAL/SOCIAL: Who am I?
ADVISORY THEMES • Setting goals • Building community • Improving academically • Planning for life after high school • Exploring careers • Using money • Preparing for student-led conferences • Planning for next year • Updating the four-year plan
SCOPE & SEQUENCE • Shows plan for each grade level • Themes repeat each year • Each lesson includes standards and activities
LESSON PLANS • One each month for each grade level (can be broken into parts for more frequent meetings) • Three pages each, consistent format • Each outlines goals, activities, additional opportunities
HANDOUTS • Prepared for each activity • Simply need to be copied and distributed • Explain student’s task and where to file in portfolio
PORTFOLIOS • Portfolios organize important information • They help students plan for the future • And reflect on accomplishments • Portfolios help students move from storage to stories…
PORTFOLIO SETUP • New students learn why they will keep portfolios • And they get help starting their portfolios
PORTFOLIO CHECKLISTS • Students receive a checklist of contents each fall • And have time at each advisory to add to their portfolios
STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES • STUDENT – Lead the conference • PARENTS – Listen and ask questions • ADVISOR – Listen, support as needed
CONFERENCE BASICS • 1 student, 1 advisor, 1-2 parents or significant adults • Approximately 20 minutes • At least once a year – middle schools may do 1 in fall (goal setting) and 1 in spring (reflection and planning) • Typically use early release days • Portfolios support students
STUDENT PREPARATION • Students begin preparing in advisory • Students are responsible for all aspects of the conference
ENRICHMENT Navigation can enrich other school programs – and other programs can enrich Navigation: • Anti-bullying programs • Tiered intervention • Mentoring and tutoring • Volunteer service • Transition programs
