  6. What is exclusive breastfeeding? An “exclusively breastfed” baby is given only breast milk (no formula, cereal, juice, water, or baby food). • “Exclusive breastfeeding” for the first 6 months • Continued breastfeeding for at least 24 months • There is no ‘age limit’ , AAP recommends breastfeeding continue for as long as mother and baby desire • Add Complimentary food along with breastmilk – to avoid allergies. Don’t stop breastfeeding abruptly.

Getting organized at home Plan your feasibility to join work , as per your organization/extending holiday/LOP/work at home, etc. Arrange for care takers before you go for work as per your convenience. Select a care provider who supports your commitment to breastfeeding. Arrange breaks at regular intervals. During your day in order to have time to pump. Try to do a “trial run” the week before you return to work. Before leaving for office, nurse your baby even if he is half asleep. Connect with other working mothers to share information and ideas.   12. Tips to deal with leaking • Cross your arms across your chest • Choose dresses of bright or dark coloured prints • Wear loose jacket or blazer to throw over your blouse. • Wear cloths that are loose and comfortable • Keep an extra shirt at work.

  13. Selecting a Breast pump • Should choose standard breast pump. • Select appropriate pump which will empty your breast quickly and efficiently. • Select a pump with good double pump. • Use appropriate pump to avoid breast tissue damage.

Freshly expressed milk • 4-8 hrs. – Room temperature. • 24 hrs. - @ 15degree C- Insulated Bag • 6 Months -Deep freeze @18 degree C – Refrigerator Handling Since it is non infectious body fluid, not necessary to use gloves while handling the milk. Expressed milk, infant formula, and baby food should never be heated in a microwave oven, instead they should be heated in their containers with warm or hot tap water running over them in a sink.

Using expressed breast milk • Stored refrigerated milk should be taken 1 hour before to bring it down to room temperature. • If the milk is kept in the freezer, bring it out of freezer compartment 24 hours before. This would help in Thawing. • Once refrigerated milk is brought out should not be stored back to refrigerator. • Left over milk could be kept for 3 hours in room temperature and then should be discarded if not used.

If you decide to wean • Plan to wean the baby after 6 month with complimentary food. • Continue expressed milk during working hours and direct breastfeed during available time till 1 year. • After 1 year of age continue nitght feeding till completion of 2 years. (approx. 2 feeds/24 hours to maintain lactation).
