  2. About Dr Mehta • Mr Jwalant S Mehta is a consultant spinal surgeon specialising in spinal deformity corrections and treatment of all spinal conditions. His is based in Birmingham at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Additionally, he has practising privileges with the BMI and Spire groups. • He serves on major steering committees of the premier international scoliosis organisation, the Scoliosis Research Society. He is currently serving on the CME and the Research Grant review committees, and is a programme reviewer for the IMAST and the annual meetings. He has recently been appointed as an honorary senior lecturer at the Aston University in Birmingham, heading the Spine module on the MCh (Orth) course. http://www.mehtaspine.co.uk

It is also responsive to the general activities such as walking. • The quality of bone density drops when a person is bed-bound.   4. Bone Health • Bone density can be assessed by specialized scans. One such scan is called the DEXA scan. It provides an objective assessment of bone density. • Blood tests give additional information regarding bone quality. • Several factors affect bone health such as reduced level of activity, age, vitamin D deficiencies, systemic illness and smoking. • Mitigating these factors can optimize bone health. • Specific medications are sometimes required to improve the bone density. http://www.mehtaspine.co.uk
