Spondylolysis Causes & Symptoms by Jwalant S. Mehta www.mehtaspine.co.uk
What is Spondylolysis? • Spinal cord along with brain makes up the central nervous system. The vertebral column houses the spinal canal, a cavity that encloses and protects the spinal cord. • Spondylolysis is a stress fracture in one of the vertebrae at the base of the spinal column. It is basically a defect in the vertebral column and can lead to weakening of the bones in the body. • It is the common cause of the back pain in children and lower back pain in young adults. www.mehtaspine.co.uk
Spondylolysis Causes: • Spondylolysis results from a weakness in a section of the vertebra called the pars interarticularis. • It is common in the people who are in high functioning sports that places lot of pressure on the lower back and spine. gymnasts, dancers, lineman, wrestlers as well as baseball players, football and tennis players are the common victims of Spondylolysis. www.mehtaspine.co.uk
Spondylosis Symptoms: • Most of the people suffering from Spondylolysis don’t exhibit much symptoms and aren’t aware of it to an extent. • Lower back pain is one of the common symptoms of the Spondylolysis. The pain usually spreads across the lower back and worsens with any form of physical activity. • The common age group for Spondylosis is around 16-18 age bracket. www.mehtaspine.co.uk
Spondylolysis Treatment: • The treatment first step is to reduce pain in the body while permitting the fracture to heal while letting the body recover. • An over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), such as ibuprofen (Motrin®), may be recommended to help reduce pain and inflammation. • The patient will be advised to take a rest from the physical sports until the bone has adequately healed. A combination of physical therapy and exercise is prescribed to the patients in order to aid the body pain free movement and improve muscle strength. www.mehtaspine.co.uk
Spondylolysis Treatment: • Some patients may need to wear a back brace for a period of time to limit movement in the spine. The doctors will take regular X-rays to ascertain if the vertebra is changing position. • Surgery is recommended in order to stabilize the spines and alleviate the back pain. The premise behind the surgery is to fuse together the affected vertebrae so that they heal into a single, solid bone. Small pieces of bone—called bone graft—are then placed into the spaces between the vertebrae to be fused. • In some complex cases, the doctors will use the metal screws and rods to further stabilize the spine and improve the chances of successful fusion. www.mehtaspine.co.uk
Spondylolysis Treatment: • The majority of patients often recover from Spondylolysis after undergoing a successful treatment. In order to prevent recurrence, the doctors will specify exercises to stretch and strengthen the back and abdominal muscles. • Regular check-ups would be advised to keep track of the problems. If in UK, consult Dr Jwalant S Mehta, one of the leading Orthopaedic Surgeon for Spine UK. • People can recover from Spondylolysis under good guidance from doctors and following the medical care. www.mehtaspine.co.uk
