  1. Why Closed Die Forging is Prefered Over Open Die Forging?

  2. The closed die forging technique involves pressing hot round bars, and their net shaping in closed dies. This metal forming process offers the desired shapes and is being widely used for all industries, including engineering, construction, power generation, aerospace, defence, oil and gas, etc.

  3. Closed die forging offers excellent strength and toughness to products. Closed die forging is preferred for small parts, as high precision is obtained in the process.

  4. Advantages of closed die forging

  5. High strength Compared to casting, closed die forging shows superior mechanical properties because of the formation of an internal grain structure that follows a part's general shape. The interior grain flow leads to higher product strength and toughness.

  6. Close Tolerance With the workforce of closed forging dies, the shapes of products are always net shape or near-net shape. We usually could win a close tolerance within ±0.5mm; for some small parts, a closer tolerance of ±0.3mm can also be achieved.

  7. No material limitation Whether it is steel, aluminum or brass, most forging companies use all such materials for closed die forging. The process is also suitable for several other metal alloys.

  8. So closed die forging is being widely used for all industries, including engineering, construction, power generation, aerospace, defence, oil and gas, etc.

  9. Better Surface Finish A good surface finish is always guaranteed by deforming the shapes using precise forging dies. In closed die forging, the surface of products is much smoother than the equivalent cast ones.

  10. Low Overall Cost Due to the good surface finish and close tolerances, closed die forging requires little machinery. The unit price is competitive when compared to other processes. So for mass production, the overall cost of closed die forging is low.

  11. Closed die forging is one of the leading manufacturing processes to produce small steel forgings. For large steel forgings, open die forging is always preferred.
