Meeting of National Managers of Tuberculosis Control Programme in the Eastern Mediterranean Region - Beirut, Lebanon, May 28 - 31, 2001 ·Background ·The National Tuberculosis Control Program was launched 1981. ·The program has achieved remarkable success. ·The introduction of DOTS from January 1996. ·The regional component of TBCP was strengthened. · The TB elimination initiative luanched in 1997 and the targets were set as under: 1.Cure rate > 90%, Incidence rate 5/100,000 by 1999 2.Cure rate > 90%, Incidence rate 3/100,000 by 2005 3.Cure rate > 90%, Incidence rate 1 or < 1/100,000 by 2010 SULTANATE OF OMAN
Meeting of National Managers of Tuberculosis Control Programme in the Eastern Mediterranean Region - Beirut, Lebanon, May 28 - 31, 2001 • Study Rationale • A national team in 1998/99 visited a number of health institution in Oman to assess the weaknesses and strengths of tuberculosis surveillance. • Following are some of the significant observations from the report:- • The incidence of tuberculosis is not uniform throughout the country. Some of the regions have not reported any positive cases since the last 2 to 3 years. • Case detection mechanism in several district is not functioning optimally. • Contact screening component is poor in some regions SULTANATE OF OMAN

Population Muscat Province : 636,560 Population Muscat District : 48,090 Population of Qantab Village : 1,896 Total clients attending the camp .. Tuberculosis and associated diseases : 246 Other health promoting activities : 244 Qantab SULTANATE OF OMAN Muscat • To detect TB suspects in Qanatab village. • To detect any associated diseases e.g. DM, HT etc. • To detect ear and eye morbidity. • Referral of selected cases to tertiary care hospitals. • Health education and community awareness. • To recommend MOH the policy on case-finding campaign or surveys in Oman.

Population Muscat Province : 636,560 Population Muttrah District : 198,930 Population Tawyan Area : 1,439 SULTANATE OF OMAN Muscat • The observed increase in the incidence could be due to the increased awareness amongst the health staff. • Similarly in recent years, there has been a general improvement in the laboratory support • Hence a community-based survey is proposed to identify missed cases and to ensure that whether or not there is a true increase in the incidence of tuberculosis in Oman
Meeting of National Managers of Tuberculosis Control Programme in the Eastern Mediterranean Region - Beirut, Lebanon, May 28 - 31, 2001 • Methodolopgy • House-to-House visits. • Field Work Study Team: Doctor, Staff Nurse, Member of Community Support Group and driver. • Questionnaire include few other health care aspects. • Collection of Samples • A single sputum sample from the suspected individual. • Storage, Transport & Processing of Samples • Samples will be transported to CPHL(Darseit) or in Regional Hospital Laboratories on a daily basis for processing. • Supervision, Monitoring & Data Analysis • Tuberculosis Control Programme, MOH, (HQ) • Logistics • Time of survey: In the evenings • Home Visits Per Day: Each team expected to cover about 5 to 6 household • Transport: 4x4 vehicle with a driver for each team SULTANATE OF OMAN
