  1. Everything Parents Need To Know About The 7 Plus Exam In The Uk The 7 plus exam is taken by children whose parents want them to enter one of the top schools. If successful, children will be able to attend one of the top schools from Year 3. Each school has their own dates on when the exams taken, this can be any time from October to January, and is when your children is in Year 2. This examination includes English, mathematics, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Most of the assessments are in written form, though some schools do test mental arithmetic, dictation and spelling. Often the school will test your child on creative tasks, such as artwork or complex puzzles, that they complete with other students or independently. In some cases there may be two founds, if your children is successful in the first round, they are invited back for a second round. The second round is often an interview process with a senior member of staff, such as a head teacher. They will hold the interview in a group or on a one-on-one basis. This provides the teacher to see how your child interacts with other children, if they can work together with other children, as part of a team. In some cases, you as the parent, may also be interviewed, so it's always best to be prepared. The 7 plus exam is an entrance exam that is highly competitive. If your children does well in all levels, above the national average, they have a higher chance of being accepted into the prestigious school of your choice. Your child may also be added to a waiting list, that is completely normal. Chances are, as a parent, you have applied to a number of schools, if your child is successful, you can choose the school you prefer. It's not uncommon for schools to receive hundreds of applications for only thirty available spaces. In this case, approximately sixty children taking the 7 plus exam will attend the second round of the exam, that is the interview stage. Based on the exams, the school narrows down their short list, offering thirty students a space and placing ten on their waiting list. Schools often make their decisions based on the examination results and they will also assess your child as an individual. Children that are polite and wild mannered, that can work with other children, are what they are looking for. Often they will also require a report from your child's current school. It is recommended to start preparing for the 7 plus exam during Year 1, so your child is prepared by the time they take the exam. This gives your child a full year of preparation. Some children start even earlier than this. This helps your child build a strong foundation. If you start preparation later, your child has more things to cover in a shorter period of time. It is important to note that every school has their own examination process. Working with an experienced 7 plus exam tutor can help you prepare your child for the interviews at various schools.
