Skeet can be practiced for fun or for the more competitive individuals; it is recognized as an Olympic sport. The National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA) regulates American skeet. Skeet shooting is a wonderful recreational activity where participants attempt to break clay targets by shooting them with a shotgun. These clay objects are flung into the air from different angles and at different speeds from two stations fitted with mechanical devices. The American version of skeet uses clay discs that are 4- 5⁄16 inches (109.54 mm) in diameter, 1-1⁄8 inches (28.58 mm) thick and have a flying distance of 62 yards (57 m). The preferred firearm used for practicing skeet is a high quality, double-barreled and under shotgun sporting 26 to 30 inch barrels and chokes that are wide open. Chokes play a pivotal role and sometimes shooters will opt for an improved cylinder choke,\ or a skeet choke, which is purely a matter of preference. Referred to as a skeet gun, skeet chokes are designed to produce a 30 inch shot pattern when fired from 21 yards. over Alternatively, a sporting gun or a trap gun with a longer barrel of up to 34 inches and tighter choke is also a popular choice. Many shooters of American skeet use semi-automatic shotguns and break-open over-and-under shotguns. The purpose of skeet is to imitate the action of bird hunting, but using clay disks instead. The shooter shoots from seven different positions. The field is set up in a semicircle with a radius

  2. of 21 yards (19 m), and an eighth position halfway between stations 1 and 7. Shooters are able to shoot from seven positions. The traps that launch the clay targets are situated on each corner of the semicircle. The traps launch the targets precisely at 15 feet (4.6 m) above the ground and 18 feet (5.5 m) outside of station 8. The first trap launches targets from 10 feet (3.0 m) above the ground, which is referred to as high house and the other launches it from 3 feet (0.91 m) above the ground, referred to as low house. The stringent rules dictate that at stations 1 and 2 the shooter shoots at single targets, which are launched from the high house and then the low house. The shooter then has to shoot a double where the two targets are launched simultaneously. The high house target should be hit first. At stations three, four, and five the shooter shoots at single targets launched first from the high house and afterwards, from the low house. At stations, six and seven the shooter shoots at single targets launched from the high house and then the low house. The shooter then shoots a double, hitting the low house target first and then the high house target. At station 8, the shooter needs to hit one high and one low target. If the shooter missed any targets, they need to be re-shot. If there was a 100% strike rate, the 25th shell must be shot at the low house station 8. The shooter needs to hit the low eight twice to achieve a perfect score.
