Laptops • Osborne 1 was the first portable computer • GRiD first laptop computer, with the calm shell design • Compaq introduced the first IBM-compatible laptop, first laptop with hard drive and standard resolution screens • NEC first notebook style laptop • Apples PowerBook introduce many new features uses in today’s laptops

  3. New Innovations in Laptops • Better batteries – NiMH, Lithium Ion • Faster CPU – Laptop Based • Better Screens: Active-Matrix LCD • Thinner, shock resistence, high capacity, reliable hard drives • Internal modem and Ethernet card • Standard ports: serial, PS/2, parallel, USB • Wi-Fi enabled

Personal Digital Assistant (PDAs) • Designed as personal organizers • Early PDAs were calculators with more functionality such as a date book or address book • Today’s PDAs have colored screens, Wi-Fi and BlueTooth enabled • Uses: Palm OS, Windows Mobile 5.0, RIM • Functions: play music, watch videos, act as a personal organizer, GPS navigation, sync with desktop computers, browse the internet, check and send email

Smartphones • Cellular phones combined with a PDA • BlackBerry is a very popular smartphone, commands 25% of the PDA market, very addictive, runs the RIM OS • BlackBerry Enterprise Server, built-in to all BlackBerries, relays email to the users smartphones • Palm Treo is another popular smartphone, runs Palm OS, plans to have a model that connects to BES

Wi-Fi • Wireless Fidelity • Designed originally as a cashier system in the Netherlands by NCR Corp/ AT&T Corp in 1991 • Works by having the Access Point transmit a SSID, or a beacon to the client, client decides whether to connect or not • WaveLAN ran at 1 & 2 MBit/s • Current speeds of up to 108MBit/s • FON – Global Wi-Fi Network

  7. U3 • U3(You: Simplified, Smarter, Mobile) • Runs Win2000 and XP applications on a USB drive • Founded in 2004 by M-Systems and SanDisk • Launch and Run without a trace
