Threats, Costs, and Downsides to Place-Displaced Work • Decline of organizational loyalty • Broad-based increase in mental health disorders; higher life-stress as we must rely on ourselves rather than on our employers • Decline in community services and facilities as population deconcentrates • Slight stateside decline in life expectancy as medical facilities decline because of fewer centers of deep excellence • Transportation industry, and particularly public mass transit, may experience declining revenue • Management styles and traditional organizational hierarchies may not be able to adapt quickly • Employment discrimination may be nearly impossible to detect • Health and fitness will decline • Labor laws will be nearly impossible to enforce • The digital divide will broaden

Likely Futures for Place-Displaced Work • Growth overall, in place-displaced work as telecommunications services become faster, cheaper, and more broadly available • Development of legislation specific to teleworkers re. children, ex-nationals, working conditions, wage floors, benefits • Strengthening of personal retirement provision laws and terms • Acceleration of growth in developed nations • Growing strength of professional associations (National Society of Professional Engineers, for example) • Smaller corporations
