Of the 27% fatal and serious collisions between 2005-2007, over two-thirds involved a motorcyclist, nearly three times the average on the motorway and A road network. When collisions involving motorcyclists are removed, the A537 becomes one of the lowest risk roads in the country. (EuroRAP 2009)
V1 (Honda CBR 900 RR-3) travelling towards Buxton fails to negotiate a left hand bend and collides into V2 (Suzuki GSXR 1000 K6) travelling from Buxton towards Macclesfield.
This is not a new problem. But the level of death and injury has fallen significantly since mid 1990’s.
The highest speed recorded from last year was 130mph. ( a motorbike) • There was a total of 615 vehicles exceeding 100mph over a six month period March - September, that equates to twenty one 100mph + speeders every week! • There was over 100,000 vehicles exceeding 60mph (10mph over the limit) over a seven month period March - September 2009. • There was a total motorbike flow of over 35,000 on the A537 during March - September 2009. • The overall average speed of all motorbikes was 53.5mph and the 85th percentile 65.3mph over March - September 2009. • That's 15mph above the limit for motorbikes

Telephone survey with 400 local residents 7 out of 10 respondents feel it is important to resolve any issues on the Cat and Fiddle road compared with other issues in the area. 8 out of 10 respondents think that motorbikes are an issue on the Cat and Fiddle Road. “Do you think there are any issues with the Cat and Fiddle section of the road?” 43% of respondents said there is an issue with dangers of speeding motorbikes on the Cat and Fiddle section of the road and 31% said that there are too many motorbikes.

Reduce the number of people and killed and seriously injured on this road by 35% • To improve the roads rating in the EuroRAP Table. • To reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on high powered 2 wheelers in Cheshire by 10%. • To increase public confidence in our agencies response to these roads and make them feel safer using this road. • To decrease the number of bikers who think that road death is inevitable. • To change the public preconception that the Cat and Fiddle is a race track.
On site February 2010 • Live by end of March • Speeds and casualties monitored • Revisit public survey and ask about race track mentality and confidence • Get views of other bikers on route • But not just about this road • To reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on high powered 2 wheelers in Cheshire by 10%.
