Slide 1:Placing a MagLev Train On The LIE To Reduce CO2 Emissions

    Designed By Siya Chen+Michelle Liu

    Slide 2:Introduction

Cars, subways, and buses… all these forms of transportations emits CO2 commissions into our atmosphere and bit by bit, it is slowly destroying our planet; our home. Many ways exist for us to slow down global warming and reduce the amount of CO2 being emitted. For many years, fossil fuels has become our primary energy source for power, and it had brought us a more comfortable way to live. It has already become a bad addiction to use fossil fuels and many Americans are not willing to give up such a relaxing source of energy. We need to not only advertise the effects of global warming on our planet or try to persuade people to use less water or to use another type of light bulb. What we need is something that emits less CO2 and yet is comfortable, relaxing, and convenient for humankind. Our idea is to place a MagLev train on the LIE in order to produce less greenhouse gas and yet, fulfill an American’s dream of a faster and a more easy ride.

    Slide 3:Hypothesis

A MagLev train can indeed be placed onto the Long Island Expressway to reduce CO2 emissions and commit to slowing down Global Warming.

    Slide 4:A Floating Train

A magnetically levitated train is simply a train that floats on a magnetic field and is propelled by a linear induction motor.

    Slide 5:How Does It Work

A maglev train is propelled by the guide-way itself rather than an onboard engine. It is moved by the changing magnetic fields. Once the train is pulled into the next section of the track, the magnetism switches so that the train is pulled on again.

    Slide 6:

    Slide 7:Advantages Of Maglev Train

A maglev train needs almost no maintenance at all. The train floats along with no need for any moving parts. The guideways for this kind of train can be elevated off the ground, resulting in using up less land. There is no friction, although there will still be air resistance. The train does not produce much sound which is particularly important for urban and suburban areas. A maglev train is extremely fast, able to run 300mph. No CO2 emissions.

    Slide 8:Disadvantages of Maglev Train

Maglev guide-paths are more costly than conventional steel railways since whole new tracks have to be built. - Maglev trains are limited to where the tracks run.

Slide 9:The U.S. is the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases in general, and of CO2 in particular. We are responsible for 23% of all CO2 emissions worldwide, even though the United States is home to less than 5 %of the world’s total population. A third of national CO2 emissions comes from the transportation sector. For every 100 gallons of gas saved, one less ton of CO2 is emitted.

    CO2 EMISSIONS

    Slide 10:CO2 Emissions (cont.)

    - Even though a levitating train uses fossil fuels to power up, the resulting CO2 emissions is much less than that from autos, trucks, and airplanes.

Slide 11:The reason we want a maglev train on the LIE is because a Maglev train does not pollute the atmosphere with CO2 emissions. The only power needed to operate the train is through the magnetized coil on the tracks which can be supplied in several ways that do not emit CO2. Several ideas that we came up with are using Windmills, Water Turbines, and Solar Power. All of these 3 ways are natural, renewable, affordable and effective.

    Green Power

    Slide 12:Wind Mills

Wind energy converts kinetic energy that is present in the wind into more useful forms of energy such as mechanical energy or electricity. Wind energy is a pollution-free form of energy. It doesn’t use fuel, neither does it produces greenhouse gasses, toxic or radioactive waste. Another potential factor is that wind energy is quiet and does not present any danger to wildlife.

    Slide 13:Water Turbines

Tidal energy is extremely reliable and runs every day like clockwork so it can be accurately predicted years from now. It operates in ocean, tidal, and river currents and does not require expensive dams that can harm the environment. It is smooth-running and rotates in the same direction, regardless of the direction of flow, making it ideal for tidal applications.

    Slide 14:Solar Energy

Sunlight is a clean and renewable type of energy. It is unlimited and can be easily maintained. Photovoltaic solar cells can directly transform sunlight into electricity.

Slide 15:During an average afternoon at peak hour, 1,420 carpools and buses, carrying 2,930 people, use the westbound HOV lane near Exit 49 alone. That’s approximately 18,460,000lbs of CO2 are being emitted annually.

    Long Island Expressway

    Slide 16:The Route

We created a possible route where the maglev train can run and we think that it should be placed in alongside the Long Island Expressway. Around that area, there are open land for water turbines and windmills to be built as power for the maglev train.

Slide 17:In a maglev train, the seats are not at all hard and made of steel like the ones in the subways. It is very similar to the ones on the airplanes.

    Comfortable And Smooth

    Slide 18:Comfortable And Smooth (cont.)

Although things that can be de-magnetized like laptops, credit cards, cell phones cannot be used on the maglev train because of the fact that the train is using magnetism to keep it moving, we suggest that all these things can be stored in little lead compartments next to the seats, therefore, easily accessible once people reach their destination.

    Slide 19:Support Our Idea

After all the research and constructing the model, we can conclude that it is definitely possible to build a maglev train on the LIE in order to reduce CO2 emissions as well as a more convenient and comfortable transportation for mankind. Not only can a maglev train slow down global warming, which is a serious issue that can change the world forever, it also results in possibly making the economy grow. Maglev trains replacing other vehicles is an absolute smart and environmental friendly idea.
