What are SICs & NAICS? • Numeric codes describing industries • SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) code • NAICS (North American Industrial Classification System) • Used by business and government information sources • Will vary from source-to-source
Classify Companies by Industry • Starbucks SIC 2095 (Roasted Coffee) NAICS 311920 (Coffee and Tea Manufacturing)
Used to Describe Industries • Such as Roasted Coffee (2095/311920) • Gathers industry information together • Used is business and government resources • Offers a way to search for information about a company or industry • Not consistent across sources
Why Two Code Systems? • SIC • Introduced late 1930s • Promoted uniform data collection • Last revised late 1980s • NAICS • Introduced 1990s • Addresses new industries • More expansive/ more codes
