  3. What is SMS? • Integrated set of: • work practices • beliefs • procedures • Organized approach to managing safety • Recognizes the potential for errors • Establishes robust defenses • Data driven, business approach

  4. What is SMS? • SMS is a “Top Down”program • Without support and commitment from top management, SMS will FAIL • SMS is size sensitive • Smaller airports will have easier time • Takes years to fully implement

  5. SMS – why now? • Accidents / incidents cost continue to rise • Can’t afford less tangible costs: • damaged reputation • loss of employee time • Current safety practices can’t do much more • Makes existing programs better • SMS will become a requirement – start now and do it right
