  1. The Benefits of Couples Counselling Relationships come with peaks and valleys and it isn’t uncommon for couples that have been in a committed relationship for years to suddenly start feeling like the spark is gone. If either party is starting to give the other the silent treatment, or nitpicking their faults, or perhaps simply stopped making an effort, it could be a huge red flag. This also doesn’t just go for couples that have been together for a long time, it can happen early on in any relationship. There may be a lot of things that can cause a relationship to hit a low, and it may feel like the end, but for many couples, this isn’t a pleasant thought and many people cling to the dregs of a relationship because they yearn for what it once was and what they hope it can be. This ultimately causes unhappiness and unless something drastic is done, these types of relationships usually fail after some time anyway. Although it may not be the first thing one thinks of, couples counselling is one of the best ways to save a failing relationship if there is still a connection to be had. However, what people should understand is that it shouldn’t be the final Hail Mary to save the relationship after it’s been on its last legs for a couple of months, it should be used as a preventative measure as that is when it has the most and best effect. The first thing to understand about couples counselling is that it is exactly what it says – the couple will be the client of the therapist and many of them enforce a strict no secrets rule. This means that even though the therapist may see you as a couple and individually, they will share everything with both parties. This means that a cheating partner cannot divulge to a couples’ therapist that they have cheated as that therapist will then be obligated to relay this information to the other partner. The second thing to understand is that relationships tend to fall into patterns after a while. There are rituals that you form and patterns that you keep to, and therapy is all about changing those patterns. Something in the relationship isn’t working and it will do you no good to keep the relationship the same if something in that relationship is causing you strife. That is why couples who sign up for couples counselling needs to be open to the idea of changing their ways. It may be uncomfortable at first and it may be a lot of work, but it is in the best interest of the relationship to try your best to avoid falling into familiar patterns. This brings us to the third point. It’s going to take some time. No relationship can be saved in just a single session. It is important to understand that this will be a lengthy process but that it will be worth every minute and penny spent as couples that want to save their relationship and want to work on it and want to listen to the advice offered by a qualified and experienced therapist will reap the fruits of a stronger bond with their partner. It is also important to understand that a couple’s therapist isn’t only there to help those that are struggling and failing in their relationships. A couple’s therapist can help you identify patterns and routines that may end up being problematic a long way down the road, and they can help you catch it in the very early stages. That is why happy couples should also go to therapy. A couple’s counsellor can do wonders for both the broken and the healthy relationship by strengthening the bond, opening communication, identifying problematic patterns, and helping you make the right decisions regarding your relationship.
