Curbside Management operates a Materials Recovery Facility in Woodfin • Creates local jobs (40+) • Diverts recyclables from landfill (16,703,628 pounds recycled in 2003)
Curbside Management, Inc. • The collection, processing & marketing of recyclables is CMI’s sole business • CMI accepts: corrugated cardboard, mixed paper, newspaper, glass bottles, aluminum & steel cans, #1 & #2 plastic bottles • CMI’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) includes an observation deck and educational resource center for viewing the processing plant and learning about products made from recyclable materials
CMI collects from: • City of Asheville (curbside + drop-off centers.) • City of Hendersonville • Town of Weaverville • Town of Black Mountain • Town of Fletcher • Town of Biltmore Forest (drop off centers.) • Over 300 business in the Asheville area
Approximately 11 drivers collect recyclable materials from curbside and drop-off centers
Drivers dump segregated materials in different areas of the warehouse
Containers including glass bottles, #1 & #2 plastics, and aluminum & steel cans are collected co-mingled and are sorted (by hand) from the sort line.
The 7 different types of materials are sorted in separate cages and bunkers before final processing.
Materials in the cages (alum. & steel cans and #1 & #2 plastics) are vacuumed out of the cages and blown into a holding chamber that uses gravity to load the materials into a baler.
Contamination is a big concern so when workers are vacuuming materials out of the cages, they do one last visual inspection of the material before it is baled.
Once a trailer is full of one commodity, it is shipped to the end user where it is made into new products.
