  2. Observing Fire Safety Health care providers must know 3 basic facts about fires: • How they start • How to prevent them • How to respond when they occur

  3. Observing Fire Safety Fires need 3 things in order to start: • Oxygen – found in the air • Fuel – any material that will burn • Heat – sparks, matches, flames

  4. Observing Fire Safety Causes of fires: • Major cause is carelessness with smoking and with matches. • Other causes: misuse of electricity (overloaded circuits, frayed electrical wires, improperly grounded plugs), improper rubbish disposal, arson, defects in heating systems

  5. Observing Fire Safety In case of fire: • Main rule istoremain calm, do not panic • RACE • R: rescue anyone in immediate danger • A: activate the alarm • C: contain/confine the fire • E: extinguish the fire or evacuate the area

  6. Fire Extinguishers • Classified according to kind of fire they extinguish • Main classes: A, B, C, and ABC • Many different types are available including: water, CO2, dry chemical, halon

  8. Preventing Fires Rules for preventing fires: • Obey “no smoking” signs • Extinguish matches, cigarettes, and any flammable items completely

  9. Preventing Fires Rules for preventing fires: • Dispose of all waste materials in proper containers • Check for damaged cords, improper grounding, and avoid overloading electrical outlets

  10. Disaster Plans • In addition to fires, other disasters may occur: tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, bomb threats • In any disaster, stay calm, follow your health care facility policy, provide for the safety of yourself and patients. • Health care workers are legally responsible for familiarizing themselves with disaster policies.
