  1. FIRES & FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

  2. WHAT IS NEEDED TO HAVE A FIRE? QUESTION #2 SAFETY TEST JUST LIKE A TRIANGLE HAS THREE SIDES, A FIRE HAS TO HAVE 3 ELEMENTS. OXYGEN TEMPERATURE FUEL

  3. OXYGEN FUEL TO PUT OUT A FIRE YOU HAVE TO TAKE AWAY ONE OF THE ELEMENTS IF WE HAVE ALL THE OXYGEN IN THE WORLD WITH ALL THE EXPLOSIVE FUEL, IT STILL WON’T BURN WITHOUT ENOUGH TEMPERATURE. SO ONE WAY TO PUT OUT A FIRE IS TO REMOVE THE HEAT (QUENCH)

  4. OXYGEN TEMPERATURE FUEL TO PUT OUT A FIRE OR REMOVE THE OXYGEN (SUFFOCATE)

  5. OXYGEN TEMPERATURE FUEL TO PUT OUT A FIRE OR REMOVE THE FUEL ALTHOUGH WE USUALLY DON’T FIGHT FIRE THAT WAY.

  6. SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION • A FIRE THAT STARTS WITHOUT ANY SPARK OR FLAME • WHEN ALL THREE ELEMENTS ARE PRESENT IN PROPER AMOUNTS

  7. SAFETY TEST QUESTION #14 • WHEN OILY OR GREASY RAGS ARE PILED TOGETHER THEY CREATE HEAT • WITH ENOUGH HEAT, WE HAVE SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION • ALL GREASY/OILY RAGS ARE STORED IN RAG SAFETY CAN ON SOUTH END OF SHOP

  8. CLASSIFICATIONS OF FIRES QUESTION #1 SAFETY TEST • TYPE A • WOOD, PAPER, CLOTHING, TEXTILES • USUALLY PUT OUT BY QUENCHING • TYPE B • FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS • USUALLY PUT OUT BY SMOTHERING • TYPE C • ELECTRICAL • MOTORS, WIRING, RELAYS

  9. TYPES OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS CARBON DIOXIDE FOR “B C” ONLY WATER FOR “A” ONLY MULTI-PURPOSE DRY CHEMICAL ORDINARY DRY CHEMICAL FOR “B C” ONLY FOAM FOR “A B” ONLY

  10. 6 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS IN THE SHOP • THEY ARE ALL MULTI-PURPOSE DRY CHEMICAL • CAN BE USED ON ALL TYPES OF FIRES • YOU KNOW WHERE THEY ARE AS YOU PUT THEM ON YOUR SHOP FLOOR PLAN

  11. HOW TO USE • REMOVE EXTINGUISHER FROM STATION • PULL SAFETY PIN • POINT HOSE AT BASE OF FIRE • EXCEPTION - FOAM EXTINGUISHERS POINT THEM AT THE FLAMES OF THE FIRE • SQUEEZE LEVER • IF REMOVED BUT NOT USED, RETURN TO PROPER STATION

  12. EXTINGUISHER MAINTENANCE • MUST BE CHECKED ONCE A YEAR WHEN IN PUBLIC BUILDINGS • HOSE IS CHECKED FOR RESTRICTIONS • PRESSURE IS CHECKED • MADE SURE THAT DRY CHEMICAL ISN’T HARDENED IN BOTTOM

  13. MAINTENANCE • YOU CAN’T “TEST” A FIRE EXTINGUISHER TO SEE IF IT WORKS • WHEN THE EXTINGUISHER IS USED, IT MUST BE REFILLED • THE VALVE CAN LEAK AFTER USE

  14. FIRE BLANKET • FIRE BLANKET USED TO SMOTHER SMALL FIRES • ONLY TO BE REMOVED WHEN USED FOR A FIRE • YOU KNOW WHERE IT IS LOCATED AS YOU PUT IT ON YOUR SHOP FLOOR PLAN

  15. FIRE ALARMS • 2 IN THE SHOP • YOU KNOW WHERE THEY ARE • DURING ANY FILE ALARM, GO TO THE NORTH DOOR AND MEET INSTRUCTORS THERE (WHERE YOU COME IN EVERY DAY) • IF FIRE IS IN SHOP, GO TO NEAREST EXIT
