  5. Rome • Rome began as a weak city-state on the Italian Peninsula. It was heavily influenced by the Greeks and

  7. What is a Republic? • A republic is a form of democracy in which the people vote for politicians to make political decisions. Also called a representative democracy How is a representative democracy different from a direct democracy?

  8. Who were the Patricians? • Patricians were members of the landowning upper class. They made up the Senate who made laws.

  9. Who were the Plebeians? • Plebeians were farmers, merchants, artisans, soldiers and traders who made up the bulk of the population. They elected their own officials called Tribunes who protected their rights by vetoing laws viewed harmful to them by the Senate.

  10. What Roman ideas about government spread to the United States? • Over 2000 years later, the framers of the U.S. Constitution would adapt Roman Representative Democracy. What problems do we see in U.S. government today?

Activity – Read pages 91 – 95 and answer the following questions • Describe the early settlements of Rome • How did the patricians control the Roman Republic • Why did Marcus feel that Lucius and the other patricians had taken advantage of them? • What changes did Marcus and the other plebeians want to make in Roman government • Why did the majority of the people lose confidence in the Roman Republic?
