  2. MIND MAPPING • MIND MAPPING is a means of pictorially representing information & exploring new ideas & concepts . • A mind map usually has a central theme which is written prominently or drawn as an image in the center of a blank page. • Major ideas related to the concept are represented by using words , phrases or pictures placed around the central idea ,& connected to it.

  3. USES OF MIND MAPPING • Overviewing • Concentrating • Memorizing • Organizing • Presenting • Training • Thinking • Negotiating • Meetings • Communicating

  4. RULES FOR MIND MAPPING • Start at the center of a blank sheet of paper& place your central idea there. • If possible , use a picture to represent the central idea. • Use color extensively. • Make branching &flowing rather than straight lines • There should be one keyword per line.

  5. Images can be used at all levels of the mind map. • Emphasize important points ,associations& interconnections. • Outlines , colors etc can be used to bracket two separate branches. • Develop your own personal style of mind maps.

  6. ADVANTAGES • Provides a global overview of a concept and its extent/depth. • Relative importance of each keyword is known immediately. • New information can be incorporated easily into the mind map. • Promotes creative thinking due to non-linear structure and visualization. • Helps in concentrating on single ,central idea.

  7. Links disjointed ideas using connections since each in a mind map must be connected to the one before it. • Each mind map is unique and so , helps in memorization/easy recall. • Combined verbal /visual structure appeals to both left & right brain thinkers. • Helps in condensing a large amount of information into a single sheet of paper.

  8. DISADVANTAGES • They can accommodate only a very limited amount of text. • Mind maps are often quite personalized and so , another person might have difficulty in understanding it. • Preparation is often quite time consuming. • Highly logical people may not find mind mapping easy. Active participation is necessary to retrieve information from a mind map.

  9. Active participation is necessary to retrieve information from a mind map. • Types of links made between concepts are limited to simple associations. • Mind mapping may not be suitable for new subjects . • Difficult to allocate space to sub catagories in the beginning. • Linear note taking is most similar to spoken language .So it is not easy to visually represent verbal information.

  10. FORCED CONNECTIONS • Forced connections or forced association is an entertaining and radical way of generating new ideas. • Forced connections helps individuals and groups to break out of the limiting thought patterns that we may get fixed with. • Helps to overcome the disadvantage of group thinking which may occur during brainstorming in groups.
