Hibernation is a natural process done by turtles & tortoises naturally in their natural environment. But they might need your help while in captivity; to hibernate well. 1. California deserts can hibernate inside the home well • They can hibernate inside the home - as it might be too wet for them outside. Soak them in order to take the poop out; after ensuring that they have not eaten anything for two weeks (voluntarily). In a box you can shred newspapers and place the tortoise on it. Then put more newspaper shreds. Select the coldest room for placing this box and keep checking the back foot of the tortoise for ensuring that no wetness is present. https://www.worldturtleday.org/
2. Box turtles can hibernate outside the home well • Box turtles hibernate outside the box well (as they can’t hibernate properly using the above technique – due to excessive dryness). • Note: But provide them safe hibernating area outside your home according to the climate present then; as otherwise you might risk the health of your turtle / tortoise. • For e.g.: - You can use pile of leaves in summer for providing turtles / tortoises a nice outdoor hibernating spot but need more precautions during rainy season. https://www.worldturtleday.org/
