Diet • Chopped lean raw meat • Fish • Smelt and fresh shellfish • Earthworms • Tubifex worms • Brine shrimp (for babies)
Myths • Water turtles should not share food amongst each other. The semolina bacteria can spread to each animal and harm them. • Milk should also not be given to water turtles due to them not having the special enzyme to digest the lactose.
Illnesses Based on improper diet and lack of sunlight Respiratory ailments caused by drafts & abrupt temperature changes . Ill turtles should be isolated from other turtles to prevent spread of disease. Signs of a sick turtle are: swollen eyes, soft shell., fungus appearing as white or gray spots, lumps or flakes on the shell or fleshy parts. Remedies include: painting the shell with 5% iodine and having it dry prior to returning to water; adding ¼ cup plain table salt for every 5 gallons of water; increase natural lighting and room temperatures
