Ways To Protect Turtles And Tortoises www.worldturtleday.org
Sea turtles are one of the oldest creatures on Earth and remained unchanged for many years. They are large and live in tropical and subtropical seas around the world. Turtles and tortoises are the most amazing animals on the planet, but many of their species are endangered. They face an ambiguous future due to many threats like pollution, human intervention and coastal development. Hence, we have to do our best to protect them. www.worldturtleday.org
1. Ensure to give nesting area lots of space and do not disturb them while nesting or trying to nest on the beach. It is better to avoid the nesting areas as female turtles emerge from the ocean looking for a place to nest. • 2. Sea turtles mainly use the light and reflections from moon to find their way to the water at night. Hence it is necessary that you turn off the lights visible from the beach which confuses the hatchlings and causes them to head towards the land instead of to the sea. www.worldturtleday.org
3. Reduce your impact on the ocean by keeping it clean and not littering it. Discarded items like fishing lines, plastic bags and trash may be confused for food and eaten by turtles resulting in injury or death. • 4. The chemicals you use at home for cleaning purpose can actually wash into the coastal waters. This may kill sea plants and animals. Hence try to reduce the chemical usage or switch to biodegradable solutions. www.worldturtleday.org
5. There are many ways you can help to save the sea turtles. Clean up the beach with your friends and family, give a presentation in your neighbourhood on saving the turtles and be a part of the rescue team. www.worldturtleday.org
