PROTEHÁ NOS TURTUGANAN PROTECT OUR SEA TURTLES An information, education and outreach campaign about the protection of sea turtles and their habitat A project by Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance in cooperation with STINAPA Bonaire, Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire and Coral Resource Management. PURPOSE AND GOAL OF CAMPAIGN • PURPOSE • To educate about sea turtles and the dangers that they face; • To create awareness for the importance of habitat protection; • To inform on ways to help protect sea turtles and their environment. • GOAL • Create local awareness and positive attitudes towards protection of sea turtles and their habitat.

  3. INITIATIVE AND COOPERATION • Initiative: DUTCH CARIBBEAN NATURE ALLIANCE • Funding: Truus and Gerrit van Riemsdijk Foundation • Cooperation: STINAPA, STCB, CRM DUTCH CARIBBEAN NATURE ALLIANCE TRUUS AND GERRIT VAN RIEMSDIJK FOUNDATION

SUPPORT • NGO PLATAFORMA: funding of 9 issues of the news sheet • Bonaire’s Telephone Company : agreed to produce pre-paid phone cards • with campaign logo and message • Kooyman NV: material for production of info board • Individuals: young lady to produce rap and jingle • Local artist: painting of info board

  5. TARGET GROUPS • SCHOOL CHILDREN (main focus) • GENERAL PUBLIC

  6. MATERIALS POSTER FACT SHEET FOLDER BUTTON STICKER Folder available in Papiamentu, English and Dutch

  7. POSTER The poster is a color affair depicting the life cycle of sea turtles superimposed over the Caribbean Sea and highlighting the path taken by Bonaire’s first satellite tracked turtle, Nautila. Posters available in Papiamentu and English

GENERIC ACTIVITIES • GENERIC ACTIVIES THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE SO FAR: • Production of fact sheet folder, poster, • buttons and stickers • Conducting of questionnaire • Press releases/ radio interview (launch, • progress updates, news) • Launching of campaign together with release of turtle stamps by POST NV • Door to door distribution of fact sheet folders • (January 2005) to households Governor Domacassé and representatives of the government, POST NV, DCNA, STINAPA BONAIRE and STCB during joint launch of campaign and release of sea turtle stamps by POST NV

  9. GENERIC ACTIVITIES • GENERIC ACTIVIES THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE SO FAR: • Distribution of posters • Approach to the tourism community, public service • org’s (accompanying letter, fact sheet, button and • poster) • Creation of banner to use during school visits, • information days etc.

GENERIC ACTIVITIES • ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR UPCOMING MONTHS • Bumper sticker and button distribution • Monthly news page in Extra (one of Bonaire’s leading local newspapers) • Poster distribution • Press releases • Information evenings for the public • Jingle on local radio station • Beach Clean Ups before and during nesting season • Further discussions with bus., org’s, etc for campaign support • Conducting post campaign questionnaire

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES • SCHOOL ACTIVIES THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE SO FAR: • Meeting with school boards and principals • Production and distribution of monthly newsletters (elementary schools) • Sea Turtle Project proposal sent to all schools (creative art projects to involve schools throughout school year (June 2005 exposition) • Educational field trips during nesting season • School visitations (February and March 2005) • Creation of an educational activity for elementary schools • Production of an info board (to use during activity)

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES • SCHOOL ACTIVIES PLANNED FOR UPCOMING MONTHS: • Production and distribution of newsletter March - December 2005 • School visits in March 2005 • Creative art projects and exposition in June 2005 • Educational field trips during nesting season • Production of a video clip for secondary schools • Fundraising activity with secondary school for tracking device • Educational activity within schools (Sep – Dec 2005) as closure of year
