  1. Pets Often Suffer From Severe Medical Issues – And Need Treatment It would be fair to say that any responsible pet owner will always make sure that their animals receive good care at home – and also when they need to see the vet because they are not 100% healthy and fit. Of course, owners always should make sure that the pets see the vet at regular intervals for vaccinations and general checkups to be sure they are not unwell – or may develop a preventable illness. And then are those times when the animal has to go to the vet’s rooms or clinic because the medical intervention is necessary. This may be a sudden illness or it may be something that has developed over time and starts to plague the animal. The first important thing to remember, therefore, is: take the pet for annual or bi-annual checkups to a vet that you trust and feel comfortable with because of their good name, their experience, and their standing as a vet in your community. A good vet will, like a good GP, be in a position to diagnose, advise, and treat conditions. One area that often needs attention, for example, concerns pets’ needs for orthopedic attention, just as other pets may suffer from heart problems or cancer later in life. Dogs and cats are not unlike their owners when it comes to their health and the issues that may plague them. Orthopedics, for example, is that area or discipline of medicine concerned with the correction of deformities of muscles and bones, also in pets such as cats and dogs. It goes further: the vet that has great knowledge about orthopedics when it comes to their clients’ pets will also know everything about nerves, joints, and tissues that connect all of these. For example, he/she will also be able to treat conditions, or at least offer some relief, when conditions such as arthritis or bursitis and osteoporosis cause pain and discomfort. The vet with this kind of background or experience and expertise will certainly be able to assist too when a cat or dog is brought in with broken bones because of a fight or injury. The moment you suspect that your animal may be suffering from an injury, make sure you take it to the vet.

  2. First, of course, protect yourself since an injured pet may bite you as a form of defense: fit a muzzle over its mouth (always good to keep a muzzle in your home as part of the first aid kit for pets), keep your face away from theirs, and carry them in a comfortable carrier or box. The vet will know best what to do: he/she will start by giving the animal the right pain medication, sedation, and then take x-rays. You will then be informed of what the extent of the problem or injury is and be told of what needs to be done to correct any fractures that may be troubling your pet. Lesser issues may be treated with a splint for the animal for a while; other injuries may require surgery, for example, a broken thighbone. A good vet with experience understands the issues and will give the best advice; therefore it is so important to know and trust that your vet will indeed offer the best help. Of course, there are more orthopedic issues than a broken foot or thigh. Think, for example, of a dislocated hip. Depending on the severity, it may be possible to put the hip back without surgery; however, in many cases, your vet may have to perform a surgery indeed, and recuperation may take time and follow-up visits. It will always depend on the injury, or the condition –and your animal’s response to treatment. What is important, though, is to deal with a widely trusted, respected, and well-experienced vet to treat your animals.
