  1. Nano-Technology The Wave Of The Future

  2. The Beginning • In a talk given in 1959, Richard Feynman was the first scientist to suggest that devices and materials could someday be fabricated to atomic specifications: "The principles of physics, as far as I can see, do not speak against the possibility of maneuvering things atom by atom."

  3. The Vision • Over thirty years ago, 20TH Century Fox produce a film called “Fantastic Voyage.” In this film, a diplomat was dying because of a blood-clot until scientist shrunk a 30-foot long clot-busting metal ship to the size of a pin and sent straight into the diplomat. This put the public eye’s interest on nanotechnology.

  4. Nanotechnology is a new technology for creating structures in the nano range. A nanometer is a billionth of a meter, that is, about 1/80,000 of the diameter of a human hair, or 10 times the diameter of a hydrogen atom. Scientist are working to control or manipulate on the atomic scale. Nanotechnology is also used for creating and using structures, devices and systems that have novel properties and functions because of their small and/or intermediate size. What is Nanotechnology?

  5. Nanotechnology is expected to make most new products lighter, stronger, cleaner, less expensive and more precise. Nano-technology will represent advances in the field of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science and mathematics. Nanotechnology will increase physician’s options for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. The major research objective is to design, model, and fabricate molecular machines and devices that could be used in the medical field. Advances for the Future

  6. Dangers and Benefits of Nanotechnology • Dangers: • It can lead to an arm race within nations • Easy to smuggle because of small sizes • Cheap duplication and manufacturing can lead to an economic disruption • Benefits: • Cheaper greenhouses • Nano-meter scale can take 100% of bacteria out of water • Cheaper computers

  7. Today’s Nano-technology • Stain resistant clothes and mattresses • Better sunscreen lotions • Reinforced tennis Rackets • Burn and Wound dressings

  8. Future Products • Devices that can: • Sense the environment • Process information or convert energy from one form to another • These products are produced by nano-scaled sensors which can detected contaminates within the environment or other biochemicals.

  9. The Nano- Robot • The Nano-Robots would recognize specific antigens, therefore  targets only unhealthy cells. Medical Nanotechnology will consists of accurate administration of chemotherapy through blood cells and pumps that are programmed to administer drugs at given times rather than continuously.

  10. Nano-Technology Regulators • On Nov. 9,2005 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 229 met in London • During the meeting they established three groups: terminology and nomenclature; metrology and characterization; and health, safety and the environment
