The first two periods of the Romantic Age • Starts in 1798, the year of the first edition of “Lyrical Ballads” by Wordsworth and Coleridge • The first period is calledthe Age of Revolutions • “Lyrical Ballads” wasn’t very popular in his time but eventually changed the course of English literature and poetry • The second period is marked by the work of Byron, Walter Scott, John Keats
Main characteristics of the Romantic period • A closeness to nature • The pursuit of emotional rapture • Idealization of women • Struggle between good and evil • Importance of love • Romantic nationalism
