Types of definitions • Basic difference: agritourism and rural tourism • Mixed definitions • Czech definition AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008
Most of the definitions are based on: • difference from mass tourism • stress on individual/small group approach • sustainability • environment and nature protection • traditions • enjoyment, but also education AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008
Alternative Tourism The alternative forms of tourism combine tourist products or separate tourist services different from the mass tourism by means of supply, organization and the human resource involved. These are rural, ecotourism, adventure (biking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, ski mountaineering, rafting, diving, caving, climbing), thematic tourism – connected with the cultural and historical heritage, the esoteric, religion, wine, traditional cuisine, ethnography and traditional music and handicrafts. AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008
Sustainable tourism Sustainable tourism is a new category and is a continuation of the conception for sustainable development which was launched at the conference in Rio in 1993. It is a result of the concerns to the protection of endangered regions on the planet as a whole and in particular the tropical woods. However, it treats urban and rural regions, cultural and historical heritage as well and consequently has broader coverage than ecotourism. Sustainable tourism’s objective is minimizing tourism influence on the local environment through promoting its conception to tourists before and during their holiday as well as provoking nature conservation practices ever since the conception stage in the outgoing sector. Agritourism as a part of sustainable tourism Agritourism is the form of tourism which capitalizes on rural cultureas a tourist attraction. It is similar to ecotourism except that itsprimary appeal is not the natural landscape but a cultural landscape. If the attractions on offer to tourists contribute to improving theincome of the regional population, agritourism can promote regionaldevelopment. To ensure that it also helps to conserve diversity, therural population itself must have recognized agrobiodiversity asvaluable and worthy of protection.” http://www.gtz.de/agrobiodiv/download/agrotourismus_engl.pdf AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008

Loosely defined it can encompass any activity that takes place in a non-urban, populated area. With farm incomes dwindling in many "developed", but also "developing" countries, and people migrating to cities or abroad, rural tourism is often seen by planners as a magic wand to stop rural decay • Antonis, Athens, Greece AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008
