Diagnostics/VacuumSystem Review Dean Walters, Advanced Photon Source
Diagnostics/Vacuum Overview • General System Overview • Diagnostics Devices • Vacuum System • Schedule – Costing - Milestones
General System Overview • Staff Organization • Schematics of System Sub-Sections • Undulator Assembly • Short Break Assembly • Long Break Assembly • Entrance Section • Exit Section
Diagnostics/Vacuum Overview E-Beam and X-Ray Profile Diagnostics
Diagnostic Devices • RF BPM • Cherenkov Detector • Charge Monitor • Radiation (µ-ray) Detector • Wire Scanner & OTR
Diagnostic Devices – RF BPM • RF BPM to be developed using the Physics design from SLAC with the fabrication of the devices occurring at APS. • Prototype devices are to be made and then tested on the FFTB at SLAC
Diagnostic Devices - Cherenkov Detector • For measuring Cherenkov radiation in-between each Undulator [33 total]. • Part of the machine protection system
Diagnostic Devices - Charge Monitor • Single unit placed in Exit Section
Diagnostic Devices - Radiation (µ-ray) Detector • The Radiation Detector is an array of scintillators that will be used to detect gamma rays that are produced from an unintended beam strike. • This devices is part of the machine protection system.
Diagnostic Devices - Wire Scanner & OTR • Wire Scanner and OTR are contained within the Electron Beam and X-Ray Profile Diagnostics [EBXPD] Station • The intent is to make a station that has several platforms within it and that they can be selected remotely. • The current concept now it will have three positions: Wire Scanner, OTR, and Beam Pass-Through. This concept is expandable for future diagnostics devices. • The Beam Pass-Through will have a smooth bore tube for standard FEL operations.
Vacuum System - Overview • Vacuum System Components • Vacuum Diagnostic Region • Flange Type Selection
Vacuum System – Components • Undulator Vacuum Chamber - Concept
Vacuum System – Components • Bellows - Concept
Vacuum System - Vacuum Diagnostic Region • Used to determine problems in vacuum systems • Can be used for Leak Checking, analyzing gaseous contamination, and pumping. • One unit placed in start of the Entrance Section • One unit at end of Exit Section
Vacuum System - Flange Type Selection • Recommendations:1. Short and Long Breaks: EVAC for tight insertion length and CF for others • 2. Entrance and Exit Sections: CF for most applications
Conclusions • The loaded schedule has been a major focus for the last six months • While most of the items in the schedule are settled, there are a number of things that need further to work before a development plan can be made [EOU]. • Have started to work on conceptual ideas of key components. • Will be starting prototype work on the undulator vacuum chamber, bellows, wire scanner, OTR, and the radiation detection monitor. • Have plans to work with both APS and Nuclear Engineering to provide the needed additional personnel.
