Slide 1:Geography and the new KS3 National Curriculum

Aims of the new curriculum The curriculum should enable all young people to become: Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society How can Geography contribute to these objectives. Important we make our SLT realise the value of Geography How is the new curriculum different? Greater focus on concepts and transferable skills (including GIS) Significantly reduced content leading to increased flexibility Expectation that PoS will be personalised to the needs of your pupils Curriculum should be cohesive and designed to ensure progression Study should include opportunities for independent and active learning.

Slide 4:How will the New Curriculum affect you?

Traditional subject based curriculum scrapped and replaced with skills / concept orientated sessions Status Quo continues. PoS reviewed and revised to reflect new flexibility and skills focus Cross-Curricular days introduced with a focus on the big picture and developing transferable skills Curriculum links / overlaps strengthened through the re-establishment of faculties with some cross faculty teaching. Condensing of traditional subjects to enable the introduction of new ‘integrated’ lessons.

Geography a subject in crisis! The number of teenagers choosing to study Geography at GCSE has fallen by a third since the year 2000! Several local schools no longer run Geography GCSE courses!!! We should view the new KS3 curriculum as an opportunity for Geography departments to grab the initiative and refresh / revive our subject. The diverse nature of Geography makes it well placed to seize the limelight in future developments. If we fail to grab this opportunity, it is likely Geography will become increasingly marginalised. David Bell (Chief Inspector for Ofsted) claims that “inspection evidence suggests that in many secondary schools the KS3 curriculum is not sufficiently stimulating or relevant to capture student interest”. Implementation Year 7 – 2008/09 Year 8 – 2009/10 Year 9 – 2010/11 Time to think and reflect

Slide 7:Devising Your New KS3 Curriculum. The Starting Point…

What sort of students do you have? Generally academic Ethnically diverse Lack independence Economically diverse What do you want them to become? Independent self-learners Culturally aware Open to new ideas Employable Interested in the world Passionate about Geography

Personalising the curriculum… The flexibility of the new curriculum gives us the opportunity to really personalise our programmes of study – making geography lessons relevant to our students. Our programmes of study should be personalised according to…. Local Issues Ability Learning Style Interests Community Needs Local Opportunities KS4 Options Key Questions to ask when producing your new programmes of study: What currently works well? What doesn’t? Which topics are particularly relevant to our students? Which aren’t? Which case studies will bring this topic to life? Which won’t? Where are the opportunities for incorporating skills? Where are the best opportunities for including fieldwork and enquiry? How will progress be assessed in this unit of work? How can I ensure that my KS3 curriculum builds on KS2 and prepares for KS4? How will I staff and resource my revised curriculum? Cross Curricular Activities – A Real Opportunity for Geography No subject is better placed The two main aims of cross-curricular teaching are to show the ‘Big Picture’ and to develop and enhance ‘Transferable Skills’. Important to grab the initiative and seize control of our own future Cross curricular activities can be skills, content, or resource focused: Skills – e.g. ICT - Google Earth; Debating; Photography. Content – e.g. Tsunami; Migration; The Environment. Resource – e.g. RGS Archive; Literature / Film.
