Training in ‘Trauma’ inSri Lanka Ranjith Ellawala
Why ‘Trauma’ needs special Training ? • Injuries are common in SL • Affected are healthy people in productive age groups • Handling multi-injured needs special approach
Who needs special training ? • Those who are involved in treating injured - Surgeons - Doctors- Accident Service / ETU /PCU/ OPD - Nurses
Primary Trauma Care(PTC) • Started in 2003 • Introduced by WFSA • 20 trainers were trained • Held in 25 cities across the country • More than 2000 doctors have participated • Regular programmes at NHSL and other teaching hospitals
Advanced Trauma Resuscitation and Initial Management course for Surgeons(ATRIMS) • Started in 2004 • Conducted by The College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka • Held twice a year in Colombo • Compulsory for Surgical Trainees
Trauma and Disaster Management Course for nurses • Three day course held once a month at NHSL • Curriculum has been improved since 2005 • More than 50 nurses can participate • In depth knowledge of trauma and disaster management.
Nursing Trauma Course • A committee will be appointed • Formulate a simple course for nurses being trained by nurses • “Training the Trainer” as well
Are we going to stop there? How are we going to improve? What is available now will be continued
The National Trauma Management Course (NTMC) • Developed by IASIC- International College of Surgeons • Five surgeons have already participated in India • Ten surgeons will be leaving for the first ‘train the trainer’ course next week • Expected to conduct NTMC throughout the country by CSSL
Consequences of introducing trauma courses… Global changes..... More and more critically injured are saved in the initial period... and they need further care....
How are we going to solve this problem ? • Trauma as a subspecialty • More advanced definitive surgical courses
