Since its origin in Wuhan, China, the novel coronavirus has gone on to infect millions around the world in 2020. The World Health Organization has taken note of the global crisis caused by this virus and labelled it a pandemic. As doctors and healthcare support staff work tirelessly to fight the spread and severity of infections, clinical trials for a vaccine are on-going. • Much research is being conducted to better understand how this novel coronavirus impacts different segments of the population. In this article, we take a look at what we know about suspected pediatric COVID 19 cases and how the infection can be managed in children.
Symptoms in suspected pediatric COVID 19 cases The symptoms of a COVID 19 infection are the same across all age groups. These symptoms include: • Cough • Fever • Headache • Chills • Loss of taste and smell • Diarrhea • Difficulty in breathing
Infected children are sometimes seen to develop pneumonia. Studies are also being done to determine if children with asthma and poorly controlled diabetes are at a great risk for COVID 19 complications. • The severity of the symptoms and how they manifest may vary between cases. A lot of research is still being done to see whether the novel coronavirus exhibits any other symptoms.
Treatment of COVID 19 in pediatric cases • Few pediatric cases of the novel coronavirus lead to hospital care. However, the infection may lead to complications in infants who are below 12 months of age. In mild cases of infection, children are prescribed rest, medicines, and fluids at home. Hospitalization may see the patient require intravenous fluids apart from other treatment depending on their overall health condition and progression of infection. In some cases, anti-inflammatory medication has been used for treatment.
Reports from clinical studies A lot of research is being done to fully understand the impact of the novel coronavirus on children. Here are some of the significant discoveries that have been made till date: • The occurrences of coronavirus infections in children are generally of a milder form when compared to adults • Certain studies in the UK and the US have noted that some of the children with infection have developed a complication called pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome that can impact the heart
Data from the CDC in China has noted that most children are generally asymptomatic • Till April 2020, only 1.7% of coronavirus cases in the US were children • There have been reported critical cases and deaths among children with COVID 19, albeit rare These are some notable facts from recent studies. The COVID 19 virus research is relatively in a nascent stage owing to the novel nature of the virus.
Looking forward • Till we have a complete understanding of the novel coronavirus and its impact on our health, it is best to stay safe and practice social distancing. This applies to children too. Do teach your child to wash their hands frequently to stay safe. Encourage fitness, healthy snacking, and video calls with friends to balance your child’s emotional and physical health. If you have an infant who needs their standard vaccinations, do speak to your doctor about whether visiting a clinic will put you and the baby at risk of infection.
