Forging is the application of thermal and mechanical energy to steel billets or ingots to cause the material to change shape while in a solid state.<br>Forging offers uniformity of composition and structure. Forging results in metallurgical recrystalisation and grain refinement as a result of the thermal cycle and deformation process. This strengthens the resulting steel product particularly in terms of impact and shear strength.<br>Forged steel is generally stronger and more reliable than castings and plate steel due to the fact that the grain flows of the steel are altered, conforming to the shape of the part.<br><br>The presentation explains the different raw materials used for forging.<br>Hope this will be helpful!

ALLOY STEEL FORGING MATERIALS Low alloy steels generally offer improved mechanical properties when compared to carbon steels. Depending on alloying elements used, improvements can be seen in: toughness, hardness, strength, wear resistance, etc. Different grades are often used in applications such as mechanical power transmission, rotating equipment, wear components, and high-stress applications.
CARBON STEEL FORGING MATERIALS Carbon steels are used in a wide variety of products and applications in many industries. The main element which determines the properties of the steel is carbon and manganese. Other alloying elements are typically trace amounts and are sometimes controlled by maximum limits. As the carbon content of the steel is increased, higher hardness and strength can be attained.
STAINLESS STEEL & HIGH-TEMPERATURE ALLOY MATERIALS • Stainless steels contain a minimum of 10.5% chromium by mass. • This alloying element creates corrosion resistance which can be amplified by further increasing chromium content. • Other alloying elements can be added to enhance other performance characteristics. Stainless steels are typically grouped into one of the following families: • Austenitic • Ferritic • Martensitic • High temperature alloys typically contain a high percentage of nickel by mass. • These materials offer increased strength and creep resistance in high temperature service.
