  2. Anulcerisabreachinthecontinuityofskin ormucousmembranedeeperthanthe erosion.Ulcersarequitecommonlynotedin theoralcavityprobablybecausethe mucousmembraneisathinnerliningthan skin.Theygeteasilyaffectedbymechanical, chemical,thermal,electricalandradiation insults.

  3. Common ulcers in the mouth are: Traumaticulcers Aphthousstomatitis Infections Drug-induced Allergy Malignancies 1. TRAUMATIC ULCERS Mechanicalcause:Patientshavetobe watchfulofanysharppartofthetooth presentintheirmouthleadingto repeateddamagetothetongueand mucousmembraneleadingtoulcers. Eatinghardfoodshouldbedonewith caution. Thermalcauses:Placinghotfoodand beveragesinthemouthcancause damagetotheoralcavityleadingtothe formationofulcers. Chemicalcauses:Chemicalslike Eugenol,HydrogenperoxideandSilver nitrateusedduringdentalprocedures havetobeusedwithcaution.

APHTHOUS STOMATITIS OR CANKER SORES Thesearethemostcommonlyoccurring ulcersintheoralcavityandarefrequently seen.Theyarebasicallyofthreetypes Minoraphthousstomatitis Majoraphthousstomatitisand Herpetiformmajorstomatitis. Minor Aphthous Stomatitis Thecommonestofthe3typesareminor aphthousulcers.Theseappearanywhere intheoralcavityfromthebuccalmucosato lingualmucosaandarenon-contagious. Theymayrangefrom1to6innumberata timeandarelessthanacentimeterin diameter.Theyareovalorroundwithan erythematousringaroundthem.Theyheal inabout7-10dayswithoutleavingascar andmanyatimemayberecurrent.

  5. Major Aphthous Stomatitis Themajoraphthousulcersareless commonandaremorethanacentimeterin diameterandtaken15-30daystohealand mayleaveascar. Herpetiform Major Stomatitis Herpetiformulcersarenotcommon.They maybeafewhundredulcerstogetherto formasinglelargeulcerandarepainful. Theexactcauseforaphthousulcersisnot knownandtheycanbeattributedtostress, lackofsleep,excessivetravelling,vitamin deficiencyormaybeattributedtoheredity. Treatmentisdirectedtowardshealingthe painandirritationbytheadministrationof topicalanti-inflammatory,steroids,and analgesics. OTHER CAUSES OF ULCERS ManyviralinfectionslikeHerpes,chickenpox etc,DrugslikeBisphosphonatesand cytotoxicdrugs,malignanciesandcertain hematologicaldiseasescanbethereasonfor ulcers.
