Understanding Glaucoma,Symptoms and Treatment

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often due to high eye pressure. Symptoms can be subtle and often go unnoticed until significant vision loss occurs. Early signs include peripheral vision loss, which can progress to total blindness if untreated. At Nexus Eye Care, we offer comprehensive glaucoma screenings and advanced treatments to manage the condition and preserve your vision. Early detection is crucial, so regular eye check-ups are essential for maintaining eye health. https://nexuseyecare.com.au/glaucoma/

1. UNDERSTANDING GLAUCOMA,TYPES, CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT What is Glaucoma Glaucoma is a disease that damages your eye’s optic nerve. It usually happens when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. That extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, damaging the optic nerve. If untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness. Types of Glaucoma Primary open-angle Glaucoma Closed-angle Glaucoma This is the most common type of glaucoma, characterized by the drainage canals in the eye becoming less efficient over time, resulting in increased intraocular pressure. This occurs when the iris blocks the drainage canal in the eye, resulting in a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. This can be chronic or acute and require urgent medical treatment. Normal tension Glaucoma (NTG) In NTG damage to the optic nerve and loss of vision occurs, even though the intraocular pressure is within a normal range. Other less common types of Glaucoma include, Congenital Glaucoma, Pigmentary Glaucoma, Secondary Glaucoma and Pseudoexfoliative Glaucoma. What Causes Glaucoma? Several factors can increase your risk of developing glaucoma, including: High eye pressure Increasing age Family history of glaucoma Myopia (short sightedness) Previous eye trauma Certain medications (such as steroids) Underlying eye conditions, including inflammation and increased cataract development What are the Symptoms of Glaucoma? Some types of glaucoma have no early warning signs, and vision changes can occur gradually, making symptoms easy to miss. With any type, you may experience: Eye pain or pressure and Red eyes Headaches. Rainbow-colored halos around lights. Low vision, blurred vision, narrowed vision (tunnel vision) or blind spots. Nausea and vomiting. What are the Treatment of Glaucoma The treatment for Glaucoma involves lowering eye pressure to slow down the rate of vision loss. Treatment cannot reverse vision loss that has already occurred. Your surgeon at Nexus Eye Care will discuss numerous treatment options including eye drops, laser, and surgery.
