  1. 8 Dos and Don'ts for Lymphedema of the Leg Are you caring for someone with lymphedema? Certain activities can trigger the onset of the condition or exacerbate its symptoms. People who are suffering from lymphedema as well as those who are at risk of developing it need to observe certain precautions. The list of dos and don’ts below are summarized from the advice of experts in lymphedema causes and treatment: Do: Practice meticulous skin hygiene Keep the skin clean. Check regularly for any rashes, fungal infections, or cracks. Moisturize daily, especially after showering or bathing. Use the lotions and ointments prescribed by the doctor. Don’t: Scrub the skin. After a bath or shower, dry the skin gently but thoroughly using a soft towel. Do not scrub it. Do: Wear appropriate compression clothing. If the doctor or therapist advised using compression stockings and bandages, wear them as instructed. It’s best to use rubber gloves when putting on compression garments. Bring these compression garments to the therapist at least once every six months so they can check their condition. Don’t: Wear clothes and jewelry that are too tight. Avoid underwear, socks, and other garments that are too tight. Don’t wear elastic bands and other tight jewelry.

  2. Do: Avoid skin injuries. It’s important to be extra careful to lower the risk of skin injuries. Use an electric razor with a nick guard instead of razor blades. Keep nails short; carefully cut them while making sure that you are not cutting the cuticles. Be extra cautious when playing with pets, as they may scratch. Prevent mosquito bites by wearing insect repellants and avoiding areas with mosquito infestations. Don’t: Walk barefoot. Always wear solid shoes to help lower the risk of injuries to the ankle, especially in the case of leg lymphedema. Do: Avoid heat. This includes hot showers, hot tubs and whirlpools, and saunas. Try not to sit too close to heat sources like fireplaces. Avoid sunburn by using sunscreen and covering the affected area with clothing. Don’t: Overeat. Obesity is believed to worsen swelling, so it’s important to maintain an ideal body weight. Keep a well-balanced diet that’s high in fiber, low in salt, and low in fat.
