  2. Anesthesia Anesthesia is used in surgery to minimize pain, discomfort, and shock for surgical patients. There are several types that can be used depending on the needs of the surgery: general, local, regional, and conscious sedation.

  3. Types of Anesthesia • General anesthesia • Regional anesthesia • Local anesthesia • Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) anesthesia

  4. How does Anesthesia Effects the Heart The effects of anesthesia on the heart are varied and complex. Overall, a general anesthetic will usually decrease heart rate, blood pressure and the strength of the heart’s pumping action. A normal heart and circulatory system will compensate quite well for this.

Effects of Anesthesia on Brain • Person unable to respond to verbal or painful stimuli. • Your memory for the time surrounding surgery will be interrupted. • Anesthesia providers must have a more thorough understanding of each anesthesia drug and its effect on parameters such as cerebral blood flow, cerebral perfusion pressure, cerebral metabolism and so on.

  6. Is Anesthesia Safe? Anesthesiologist will discuss with you the risks of anesthesia during your pre-operative visit. In general, anesthesia is very safe. Each patient’s medical history and type of surgery will influence the risk of undergoing the procedure. Your anesthesiologist will discuss these risks with you and will implement an anesthetic plan that they believe is safest for you.
