The Digital Conversion What do you really need to know about DTV?
The clock is ticking… • On February 17, 2009 Television Will Evolve • In 406 days, the era of analog broadcast television in the United States will end as the nation completes its transition to an all-digital system. While this change will mark the end of the traditional analog method of broadcasting over-the-air television, it won’t signal the end of free broadcast television, and your favorite broadcast programs and local television stations will still be available.
What is DTV? • Digital Television (DTV) …is a new free broadcasting technology that provides dramatically clearer pictures and better sound quality • …allows TV stations to broadcast several programs at the same time • …is a more efficient way to broadcast television, freeing up more airwave space
Am I affected? • Ask yourself “How do I get my TV?”
You might be… • Television sets connected to cable, IPTV, or satellite will not be affected, and will continue to receive programming after this date by their paid subscription
Who is affected? • Consumers who receive free local broadcasting signals through antennas or rabbit ears will be affected by the switchover if their televisions do not have digital tuners
How many are affected? • At least 19.6 million households receive only free local broadcasting signals – An additional 15 million households have at least one analog TV set (bedroom, kitchen table, basement) – Approximately 64 million analog television sets are in use across the country
If affected - What do I need to do? • Three ways to make the switchover: • 1. DTV converter box—Federal Voucher Program (https://www.dtv2009.gov/) • 2. New (DTV) television with built-in tuner • 3. Paid service (Cable or Satellite)
DTV as easy as 1-2-3 • 1) Buy a DTV converter box (vouchers) • 2) Connect your antenna to the RF input on the converter box • 3) Connect the output of the converter to the RF input of your TV
